Secondary glazing manufactured and installed by Granada Secondary Glazing has created quieter and more comfortable accommodation at a newly built Aparthotel in the heart of London.

Designed by architects TP Bennett and constructed by Bamfords Trust Plc on a former garage site in Whitechapel Road, the Adagio Aparthotel London offers 132 modern apartments located close to the Tower of London and Tower Bridge.

However, to provide additional soundproofing to the primary double-glazed windows, secondary glazing was specified for around 70 of the 147 bedrooms on the north elevation and partly on the west elevation facing the main road to decrease external noise.

A combination of Granada Glazing’s Slimline Hinged Units, Heavy Duty Hinged Units, two-pane Horizontal Sliding Units and Lift Out Units were installed in street-facing rooms to meet the required noise reduction level.

Powder-coated in an RAL 9003 satin finish, the slimline aluminium frames blend in with the interior décor without impacting on the visual aesthetics of the guest accommodation. When correctly installed, secondary glazing can make buildings up to 80% quieter by reducing noise levels up to 54dB.

For Granada Glazing’s technicians, a particular challenge on the project were the primary windows which are in the curtain walling and open inwards. This required the horizontal sliding units to be measured and designed with the correct panel offsets to allow the primary windows to open through the secondary frames.

Granada Glazing’s products and professionalism impressed Bamfords Trust Project Manager Martin Hart who comments: “The installation and the end products were very good; the secondary glazing looks amazing. It’s the first time we have used Granada Glazing and I’ve been very impressed with them. I would definitely use the company on future projects, and I would recommend them.”

When seeking quotations for the secondary glazing, Martin already had two quotes and was looking for a third when he spotted a Granada Glazing van outside a nearby hotel. “I thought if they’re working for the Hilton, they must be good,” he adds. “I wrote down the details of the company from the van, sent them an enquiry, they gave us a competitive price and won the job. They’ve been very good.”

The new Aparthotel is due to open in the autumn.
