Secondary Glazing Fitted at Newport Market

Granada Glazing designed, manufactured and installed bespoke aluminium secondary glazing as part of a £12 million refurbishment of the traditional Newport Market in South Wales.

The revamp of this historic Victorian Grade II listed building is thought to be the largest mixed-use redevelopment of a market in the UK.

Providing a quiet internal environment was essential as the refurbished building will house more than 100 independent businesses, such as ‘street food’ restaurants, a workspace hub and offices, alongside 42 affordable apartments.

Working directly with Penarth developers Loft Co, Granada Glazing’s technical team devised the optimum secondary glazing solution to solve the key issue of external noise intrusion. Located in the bustling heart of Newport, the building is also close to the town’s bus terminal.

Granada’s initial involvement was with refurbishment of the office space at one side of the building, starting with 50 units in Riverside House.

For this first phase, Granada devised a bespoke secondary glazing system using balanced vertical sliders to fit discreetly with the existing primary sliding sash single glazed bay windows. The 6mm toughened safety glass panels were set at a 150mm cavity from the primary windows for optimum acoustic insulation.

Secondary glazing is the proven cost-effective, efficient and discreet solution to cure issues with external noise, thermal efficiency and enhance security in buildings of all ages. When correctly installed, secondary glazing can make buildings 80% quieter by reducing noise levels up to 54dB.

Powder coated in a white finish, the slimline secondary frames mirror the style of the original windows making them virtually indetectable from the inside or outside.

“The use of safety glass was a priority, given the building’s new multi-purpose use, and reducing noise intrusion was the principal issue,” comments Mike Latham, Granada’s Commercial Director. “Given the building’s listed status, we had to satisfy strict planning requirements, including the need to install secondary glazing to match the primary windows’ sightlines.

“Installing secondary glazing has enabled Newport Market to retain the appearance and charm of its original windows, while enhancing the glazing to 21^st century standards. This beautiful old building has been restored to its former glory and kept its character, with the benefit of secondary glazing providing a quieter – and warmer – environment for all.”

Redevelopment of the market site began in January 2021 and Granada Glazing will be undertaking a second phase with 75 windows in Griffin House, adjoining the other side of the market in coming weeks.
