A recent commercial installation completed by Granada Secondary Glazing has been declared carbon neutral a little over a year after completion, an independent report has revealed.

The report was conducted by Eco Design Consultants, a Buckinghamshire-based architectural design company, to assess the environmental impact of a Granada Secondary Glazing installation at Natwest, High Street, Sheffield, and to assess how quickly the units became fully carbon neutral.

The report set out to approximate the carbon payback of installing secondary glazing in terms of CO₂, and to calculate the emissions saved from fuel compared with the approximate embodied CO₂ produced during the production of Granada’s aluminium units.

The results were staggering, revealing that the secondary glazing system installed by Granada will save approximately 12.44 tonnes of carbon every year, in comparison the 14.4 tonnes of carbon that were used during the production of the units. Payback in carbon terms was deemed to take just 1.2 years based on these figures.

The outcome was then directly compared to a triple glazed window, which the report revealed would have resulted in further carbon usage of between 30 and 48 tonnes throughout the production of the units.

The report concluded that the addition of Granada’s high-spec secondary glazing solution will make a huge environmental improvement to the thermal performance of the Natwest building, with a predicted 97% saving in energy use over the building’s lifespan.

Mike Latham, Commercial Director at Granada Secondary Glazing, said he was delighted with the report’s findings:

“It’s fantastic to have confirmation of what we’d suspected for years, that secondary glazing is a hugely economical and environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional window replacement.

“The team at Eco Design Consultants specialise in this type of work, they’re experts in their field, and they’ve given us some incredibly tangible evidence of the effectiveness of our bespoke secondary glazing system and how quickly it becomes carbon neutral.

“Architects and specifiers from across the UK are turning to secondary glazing for projects spanning across a whole host of sectors. Reports like this are only ultimately going to strengthen our position in the marketplace. Add to that the recent launch of our brand-new product range and it’s shaping up to be an incredibly exciting time for Granada.
