A Hereford-based landlord has ensured her tenants are enjoying a warmer and quieter environment thanks to secondary glazing, manufactured and supplied by Granada Glazing.

Originally a merchant’s home built around 1750, Compton House in central Hay-on-Wye has over the years housed a milliner, a large hardware store in 1900, a dental practice and, following this, a GP surgery in the 1960s and 70s. Five flats owned by the landlord now occupy the Grade II listed property, which is in the Brecon Beacons National Park conservation area.

Landlord, Louise Davies, and her father Derek Wilson, chose Granada’s secondary glazing system to replace some older secondary units and improve the thermal efficiency of the flats, which have single-glazed timber sash windows. An added benefit is the reduction in noise extrusion.

A total of 18 units were installed – a mix of vertical sliding units, horizontal sliding units and lift out units – all with 6mm Low E glass that reflects heat back into the rooms. All the flats were treated using Granada Glazing’s latest high-specification secondary glazing range that offers the most unobtrusive solution on the market.

“The flats are a lot warmer, and because secondary glazing provides acoustic benefits, it’s definitely made a big difference to the noise as well,” comments Louise, the property manager. “Secondary glazing was the most cost-effective choice to bring the windows up to modern thermal efficiency standards.”

Landlord Louise chose Granada Glazing for the substantial townhouse as she had used the company’s secondary glazing in her own home, also Grade II listed and in the same conservation area. “The windows were what we wanted, we fitted them and found they are excellent and do such a good job. So, it made sense to use the same company again for the flats.”

By reinstating secondary glazing ‘better than we’d had before’, Louise reckons it was ‘worthwhile spending the money’, adding: “Replacing the large timber sash windows like-for-like would cost at least £3,000 per window. So, we would have to do that in bitesize chunks. But in the meantime, the Granada windows are doing a great job.”

She concludes: “The secondary glazing is a worthwhile investment; I feel it was well worthwhile spending the money. The tenants seem very pleased with their increased comfort, and I can tell going into the flats that they’re quieter and warmer. That’s good!”

Suitable for all property types, Granada’s slimline aluminium secondary glazing frames can be powder coated in over 200 RAL colours. Virtually invisible, they blend in with any interior décor. The Granada Glazing product range encompasses hinged, sliding, vertical sliders, including tilt back, and lift-out options. Full training and marketing support is available to installers across the UK.
